Antibiotics from Moulds

Abstract

THE antibiotic for which the structure anhydro-3-hydroxymethylene-tetrahydro-γ-pyrone-2-carboxylic acid has been proposed1 was detected in the metabolism solution of Aspergillus clavatus2 (clavacin)3, was isolated in crystalline form from Penicillium claviforme (claviformin)4, P. patulum (patulin)1 and A. clavatus (clavatin)5. The chemical nature of the product was investigated1,5 and the structure given above was proposed1. The product has also been isolated from the metabolism solution of P. expansum6, A. giganteus7, P. melinii8 and Gymnoascus sp.8.
