Abstract
IT would be a pity if dislike of the Soviet's foreign or domestic politics should lead men of science to take an unduly gloomy view of the position of archæology in Russia1. Prof. Tallgren's last visit to the U.S.S.R. coincided with mine in 1935, and since then many changes have supervened, one may hope for the better. For example, in 1936 a new periodical, Sovietskaya Archeologiya, better printed and illustrated than its immediate forerunners, began to appear, to make up a little, admittedly inadequately, for the deficiencies in publication which Tallgren deplored.
