    Abstract

A MECHANICAL device for eliminating the computations involved in obtaining a smooth curve, from a set of data such as the annual distribution of rainfall, is described by T. Schumann. The device consists essentially of a vertical wooden board to which are attached movable glass cylinders filled with mercury in which iron rods are floating. The author gives the theory underlying the mechanical process involved and suggests that the device may be useful in dealing with economic and industrial data.
