Mechanical Device for Smoothing Data

Abstract

As is well known, the application of any reasonably satisfactory formula for the smoothing of a lengthy series of data involves a considerable amount of time and labour. In a recent article1, I indicated the possibility of constructing a mechanical device whereby all mathematical computation would be eliminated. Such a machine has now been constructed.
