Abstract

THE Pontine region (in Latin, Ager Pometinus, from the name of the ancient Volscian city of Sessa Pometia), known more commonly in the past as the Pontine Marshes, is situated in the southern part of Latium, and has been famous from remote times. During recent years, the attention of the civilised world has been directed to it, owing to the extensive reclamation works which have completely transformed its traditional aspect.
