Abstract

THEORETICALLY, a particle moving without friction on the surface of a rotating planet should describe a circular path in the course of twelve pendulum hours, that is, with a period given by where *** is the angular velocity of the rotation and is the latitude. It is generally assumed, that these movements are insignificant compared to the currents actually existing in the ocean.
