Abstract
ME. THOMAS HEBDEN, of Keighley, who died on Jan. 3, at the age of eighty-one years, was one of the Yorkshire naturalists who, in the intervals of a business life, devoted himself to a particular branch of botany. He was a correspondent with many of the leading lichenologists of his day, and this correspondence was maintained almost up to the day of his death and is reflected by the numerous references to Hebden in lichenological literature. His correspondence with Nylander added several species of Verrucaria to the British flora, these being published under the joint names of Shackleton and Hebden in the Naturalist of 1892. His herb arium and scientific books have been bequeathed to the museum of his own town.
