THE paradoxical interrelationship between the plant and the gall-producer, the larva, led to a correspondence between Mivart, Romanes, and other biologists, which appeared in NATURE of 1889 and 1890, and has since been extensively reproduced in works on cecidology, such as Küster's “Die Gallon der Pflanzen” (pp. 365–372; 1911). I have attacked the problem from a purely chemical point of view, my results leading me to the conclusion that the interrelationship between the gall-producing larva and the plant may be regarded as one of inter-compensation.
