Abstract
A LETTER in NATURE of November 15, by Prof. L. Vegard, contained some statements regarding the work of Dr. Shrum and myself on the luminescence of solid nitrogen and argon that would appear to warrant some comment from me. Prof. Vegard's article appears to give the impression that our discovery that the band near = 5577 Å in the spectrum obtained with solid nitrogen had a triplet structure with none of the components coinciding with = 5577.35 Å was made after he himself had noted this fact. A reference to our paper will show that it was received by the Royal Society on June 14 of this year. A brief notice of it appeared in NATURE of July 5.
