Abstract
WITH the École Normale at Paris, which has just celebrated its centenary, the names of a number of distinguished men of science are associated. At the present time, no less than twelve of its old students are members of the Academy of Sciences. Pasteur left Lille to become the director of scientific studies at the school, and carried on, while in connection with it, the researches which have made his name known throughout the world. M. Bertrand, the Perpetual Secretary of the Academy, is an old student of the school, and among other eminent names included in the list of its alumni are MM. Darboux, Joubert, Serret, Hermite, Puiseux, Briot, Bouquet, Giard, Baillaud, Chaive, Floquet, Pellet, Tisserand, Appell, Picard, &c.; while the teaching staff now contains such men as Goursat, Tannery, Gernez, Dufet, Houssay, Constantin, Raffy, Violle, Joly, and Wallerant.
