Abstract
THE study of the height of the aurora borealis above the earth's surface is, it will be easily conceived, of the greatest importance in understanding the nature of this phenomenon. Unfortunately the height of the aurora has always been, and is to some extent still, a moot point in natural science. There are, of course, not wanting estimates and observations relating to this question, but the general results of these, particularly of the earlier ones, are very contradictory. There seems, however, to be every probability of this problem being very soon solved.
