A Complete Solar Rainbow


MR. D. MORRIS, in his account of this rainbow (p. 436) appears to have fallen into a mistake in stating that its inner diameter—taken by Capt. Winchester, R.N.R.—was 43° 08′. It should be, I think, “inner semidiameter”. The first circumsolar bow has a semidiameter of 41° 37′. That is almost necesarily invisible. The second circumsolar bow has a semidiameter of 43° 52′, rarely visible. I have no doubt that was the bow witnessed on board the Norham Castle on August 16
