Hypoblast from human pluripotent stem cells regulates epiblast development
Authentic hypoblast cells created from naive human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) spontaneously assemble with naive hPSCs to form a three-dimensional bilaminar structure (bilaminoids) with a pro-amniotic-like cavity.

Broad histone H3K4me3 domains in mouse oocytes modulate maternal-to-zygotic transition
Three papers in this issue of Nature use highly sensitive ChIP–seq assays to describe the dynamic patterns of histone modifications during early mouse embryogenesis, showing that oocytes have a distinctive epigenome and providing insights into how the maternal gene expression program transitions to the zygotic program.

Induction of mouse germ-cell fate by transcription factors in vitro
Expression of the three transcription factors BLIMP1, PRDM14 and TFAP2C, or of PRDM14 alone, converts epiblast-like cells into primordial germ cell (PGC)-like cells; the transcription-factor-induced PGC-like cells acquire key transcriptome and epigenetic reprogramming in PGCs, and contribute to spermatogenesis and fertile offspring.
