Patard and colleagues have performed the largest multicenter analysis so far of the prognostic significance of histologic subtype in RCC. They compared three histologic subsets—clear-cell, papillary and chromophobe tumors—and, although these showed prognostic significance on univariate analysis, this was lost on multivariate analysis. The three histologic subtypes have different underlying molecular and genetic abnormalities, so it would be reasonable to presume that their clinical course might differ.
