More-efficient brain circuitry associated with risk of schizophrenia?

The regulatory protein DARPP-32 is associated with dopaminergic neurotransmission in the striatum, and with interactions between the prefrontal cortex and the striatum. Animal studies have implicated DARPP-32 in processes involved in schizophrenia, but there is a dearth of data about the protein's function in humans. In a recent study, Meyer-Lindenberg et al. investigated the role of DARPP-32 in the human brain by studying variation in the PPP1R1B gene, which codes for DARPP-32, and the functional consequences of this variation.
