The subthalamic nucleus (STN) is a well-established target for deep brain stimulation (DBS) to improve motor function in severe Parkinson's disease (PD). It has also been suggested that it might be safe and effective to target the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN), which has a role in postural stability and gait. A recent study by Stefani et al. focused on the effect of stimulation of the PPN on axial signs in patients with advanced PD.
