Transient orexin receptor blockade induces sleep without cataplexy

The orexin neuropeptides are well conserved across mammalian species, and contribute to regulation of the sleep–wake cycle. Deficits in endogenous orexin tone have been implicated in the pathophysiology of narcolepsy. Brisbare-Roch et al. have now investigated the effects of an oral antagonist of the orexin OX1 and OX2 receptors (ACT-078573; Actelion Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Allschwil, Switzerland) on sleep-related variables.
