Inadequate maturation and needle infiltration of arteriovenous fistulae in hemodialysis

The National Kidney Foundation's Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative guidelines encourage more-frequent use of primary arteriovenous fistulae (AVF) in hemodialysis patients, because this vascular access type has better patency rates and fewer infectious and thrombotic complications than prosthetic arteriovenous grafts (AVG). Two studies published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases underline some potential barriers to the success of AVF.
