Standard assays underestimate the prevalence of albuminuria

Microalbuminuria is a risk factor for renal and cardiovascular disease and premature death. It has recently been shown that, compared with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), which detects a fraction of albumin that is not immunoreactive, the standard immunochemical assay underestimates the amount of albumin in the urine of people with diabetes.
