The optimal frequency of epoetin administration in patients with renal anemia is still debated. This study by Grzeszczak et al. provides new data on management of anemia in peritoneal dialysis patients. In an open-label, randomized, controlled multicenter study, the investigators showed that reducing the dosage frequency of subcutaneous epoetin beta to once per week in peritoneal dialysis patients previously receiving stable twice-weekly or thrice-weekly doses maintains hemoglobin levels without need for a significant dose increase. Stable hemoglobin levels were also maintained when the dosage interval was extended from 1 week to 2 weeks, but a 13% increase in epoetin dose was necessary in this group.
