Transvenous leads increase thromboembolic risk in patients with intracardiac shunts

Patients with intracardiac shunts might at some point require a pacemaker or an implantable cardioverter–defibrillator (ICD). These patients may have numerous thrombotic risk factors, however, and transvenous pacemaker or ICD leads are associated with a potential for systemic thromboemboli. Khairy et al. have, therefore, investigated the risk of systemic thromboemboli associated with transvenous leads in patients with intracardiac shunts.
