Perimembranous ventricular septal defects (VSDs) involving the membranous septum and the adjoining muscular septum are the most common form of congenital heart defect. Traditional surgical repair techniques are associated with an increased risk of complications such as complete heart block, arrhythmias, wound infection and neurologic sequelae. The Amplatzer® Membranous VSD Occluder (AGA Medical Corporation, Golden Valley, MN) has been specifically designed to repair perimembranous VSDs with minimal incursion on the aortic valve. Several small trials have reported successful defect closure using this device in the past few years.
