How cost-effective are sirolimus-eluting stents when compared with bare-metal stents?

The sirolimus-eluting CYPHER® stent has been evaluated against BMSs in a number of randomized trials that have included approx2,500 patients. It has consistently reduced restenosis and, more importantly, the need for revascularization. Similar results have been shown with the TAXUS® stent (Boston Scientific, Maple Grove, Minnesota).
