Pulmonary-vein isolation with radiofrequency ablation as first-line therapy for atrial fibrillation

Treatment with antiarrhythmic drugs and anticoagulation is the current first-line therapy for patients with symptomatic atrial fibrillation (AF); however, this approach is often ineffective and is associated with serious clinical risk. Data from a small multicenter prospective randomized trial indicate that pulmonary-vein isolation (PVI) achieved by radiofrequency ablation might be a feasible alternative.
