Despite recent advances in the diagnosis and medical management of patients with chronic heart failure, morbidity and mortality remain high.1 Given the increasing number of elderly individuals affected, developing an appropriate risk-stratification system is of tremendous importance. In the majority of patients with chronic heart failure, systolic and diastolic dysfunction coexist. Recent evidence suggests, however, that even in asymptomatic individuals with either systolic or diastolic dysfunction, all-cause mortality is significantly increased.2
