Low circulating endothelial progenitor cell counts predict cardiovascular events

Cardiovascular risk factors can induce endothelial injury and proinflammatory events leading to the formation of atherosclerotic lesions. Circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are proposed to mediate endothelial repair mechanisms, helping to maintain endothelial functional integrity. Schmidt-Lucke et al. assessed whether EPC levels correlate with progression of atherosclerotic disease.
