Increased clinical benefit of atorvastatin at high doses in stable coronary heart disease

Current guidelines recommend using lipid-lowering therapy to achieve an LDL cholesterol level below 1.8 mmol/l in patients with acute coronary syndromes, but reduction below 2.6 mmol/l is not proven to provide additional clinical benefit in patients with stable coronary heart disease (CHD). A recently published report from the Treating to New Targets (TNT) study examines the effect of high-dose atorvastatin on cardiovascular events in this population.
