The prevalence of AF is increasing in older people1 and the risk of stroke in untreated AF patients increases from 1.3% for those aged 50–59 years, to 5.1% in those aged 70–79 years.2 Studies have shown that anticoagulant therapy is more beneficial than placebo or aspirin,3 but the risk of bleeding is increased. This is the reason for much of the underprescribing for anticoagulation.
