Each year over 3,000,000 people die from sudden cardiac arrest worldwide.1 Many of these deaths result from sustained VT.2 The ICD effectively terminates sustained VTs and is the cornerstone of therapy for patients with or at high risk of sudden cardiac arrest.2 The number of ICD devices implanted worldwide now exceeds 100,000 per year.1 By contrast with antiarrhythmic drugs, which prevent the development of arrhythmias, the ICD terminates sustained VTs after they have developed.2
