SNARE (Soluble NSF Attachment Protein Receptor) proteins mediate membrane fusion events, such as vesicle fusion and exocytosis. Prior to membrane fusion, SNARE complexes exist in a trans-SNARE conformation on opposing membranes. Fusion results in the formation of cis-SNARE complexes on the same membrane.
