Secretion involves the release of proteins and other macromolecules by a cell. In eukaryotic cells, proteins synthesised at the ER are transported to the Golgi, where they are packaged into vesicles, transported to the plasma membrane and released via exocytosis. Bacterial secretion systems are essential for infection of host cells.
