Plant polarity

Definition

Plant polarity refers to the asymmetric distribution of cellular components along a particular axis within a cell, and is essential for processes such as intercellular communication, cell division, cell morphogenesis and differentiation. Polarised cells are involved in the patterning of plant tissues and organs, and therefore contribute to the overall shape of the plant.

    Sphingolipids in the trans-Golgi network have been implicated in polar trafficking. Here Wattelet-Boyer et al. show that hydroxylated C24- and C26-acyl-chain sphingolipids are enriched in trans-Golgi network subdomains that are critical for polar sorting of the PIN2 auxin carrier in plant cells.

    During development in Arabidopsis plants, populations of shoot stem cells and root stem cells are established at the embryo's apical and basal poles, respectively. PLETHORA genes are master regulators of root fate, but the regulators of shoot fate were unknown.
