Mast cells

Mast cells are a type of innate immune cell. They contain large granules that are packed with immunomodulatory and vasoactive molecules, which are released following mast cell degranulation. Mast cells may protect the host during parasitic or bacterial infections, but they can also have detrimental roles in allergy.

Japanese encephalitis virus neuropenetrance is driven by mast cell chymase

How Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) penetrates the blood-brain barrier (BBB) remains unclear. Here, using a genetic mouse model and a virulent JEV strain, the authors show that perivascular mast cells (MC) mediate JEV neuroinvasion and identify the MC-protease chymase as a potential therapeutic target.

Omega-3 fatty acid epoxides are autocrine mediators that control the magnitude of IgE-mediated mast cell activation

Hiroyuki Arai and colleagues characterize a new group of epoxy ω-3 fatty acid–derived proinflammatory lipid mediators, an enzyme mediating their biosynthesis and a signaling pathway by which they regulate a threshold of mast cell activation and anaphylaxis, revealing new targets for mast cell–mediated diseases.
