The haemic and immune systems are the systems of organs and tissues, including the bone marrow, spleen, thymus and lymph nodes, involved in the production of cellular blood components.

    Antiviral immune responses involve clustering of plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDC) in response to endosomal TLR7-mediated sensing of viral RNA. Here the authors show the GTPase Arl8b controls translocation of TLR7+ endosomes to the periphery of the cell via microtubule interactions, thus enabling pDC clustering and type I interferon production.

    CD4+ T cells secreting interleukin-17 (TH17) have diverse functions in modulating autoimmune diseases. Here the authors show via transcriptome analyses that a subset of human TH 17 co-expressing interferon-γ (TH1/17) has a molecular signature similar to “pathogenic” mouse TH 17 but distinct from “non-pathogenic” mouse TH 17.

    Antigen presentation is generally considered the domain of innate immune cells, but CD4+ T cells can transphagocytose bacteria from infected dendritic cells. Here the authors show CD4+ T cells can transphagocytose bacterial and tumour antigens and present them to CD8+ T cells to activate memory and cytotoxic functions.

    Spondyloarthritis is an inflammatory disease with Th17 cells implicated in the pathogenesis. Here the authors show that patients with spondyloarthritis have increased numbers of GM-CSF-secreting blood and synovial lymphocytes, Th17 or not, that carry a unique transcriptional profile including enhanced GPR65 expression.
