A branching model of lineage differentiation underpinning the neurogenic potential of enteric glia
The enteric nervous system encompasses the gut-intrinsic neuroglial networks that regulate gastrointestinal functions. Based on single-cell analysis, the authors propose a model in which neurogenic differentiation paths branch from a gliogenic trajectory.

Cortical astrocytes develop in a plastic manner at both clonal and cellular levels
Previous studies on astrocyte development have led to controversial results due to a lack of pertinent tools. Here, authors analyze large numbers of astrocyte clones generated by nearby cortical progenitors using the MAGIC Markers strategy and ChroMS 3D imaging, and show that clonally-related astrocytes organize in a non-stereotyped manner and that cortical astrocyte subtypes are not intrinsically specified.

Ep400 deficiency in Schwann cells causes persistent expression of early developmental regulators and peripheral neuropathy
The Ep400 chromatin remodeler determines genomic distribution of variant histones. In the current study, the authors show that loss of Ep400 in Schwann cells leads to aberrant expression of developmental regulators, and a peripheral neuropathy phenotype.

Chi3l3 induces oligodendrogenesis in an experimental model of autoimmune neuroinflammation
Chitinase 3-like-3 (Chi3l3) is expressed in microglia, but its function is not clear. Here the authors show that Chi3l3 is expressed in the subventricular zone in mouse experimental immune encephalitis, which induces oligodendrogenesis.

Pharmacogenetic stimulation of neuronal activity increases myelination in an axon-specific manner
Neuronal activity is known to increase myelination by oligodendrocytes in the mouse brain. Here, Mitew et al. demonstrate that chemogenetic manipulations of somatosensory axon activity both increase the generation of new oligodendrocytes and preferentially enhance myelination of the activated axons.
