Free-electron lasers

Free-electron lasers create coherent light by constantly accelerating a beam of electrons. Free-electron lasers are particularly useful because they can produce radiation with a short-wavelength, down to just a few tenths of a nanometre. Thus, it is hoped they will become an important tool for atom-level material characterization.

Here, the authors show time-resolved measurements of X-ray free-electron laser induced electronic decay of CH2I2 molecule probed with NIR pulses and identify mechanisms behind different transient states lifetimes.

    A nearly Fourier-limited X-ray free-electron laser beam is generated by a self-seeding scheme. The beam in the first half of the undulators is monochromatized via Bragg reflection, and is subsequently amplified in the remaining undulators.
