Completion of cell division requires severing both the microtubules and the plasma membrane that connects daughter cells. Here, the authors show that branched actin regulates ESCRT localization to promote the microtubule cut, which happens before membrane scission.

Kuchitsu et al. show that STING-positive vesicles of a recycling endosome origin are encapsulated into lysosomes after STING ubiquitination and this process requires ESCRT proteins Tsg101 and Vps4.

STING is an intracellular sensor of pathogen- or host-derived DNA. In this study, the authors identify an ESCRT complex that regulates STING degradation, thus acting as a homeostatic regulator of STING signalling and type-I interferon responses.

In this issue of Nature Cell Biology, Mercier et al. show that acute changes in membrane tension may be a physiological trigger for ESCRT assembly, which drives membrane scission, luminal vesicle budding, and a wide array of other membrane remodelling events throughout the cell.

Vietri et al. show that failure to repair micronuclear membranes is caused by unrestrained activity of ESCRT-III.

The endosomal sorting complex required for transport (ESCRT)-III is critical for membrane abscission; however, the mechanism underlying ESCRT-III-mediated membrane constriction remains elusive. A study of the dynamic assembly and disassembly of the ESCRT-III machinery in vitro and in vivo now suggests that the turnover of the observed spiralling filaments is critical for membrane abscission during cytokinesis.

The ESCRT-III complex is shown to counteract the loss of plasma membrane integrity in cells undergoing necroptosis, thereby preventing or delaying cell death.
