Complement is part of the innate immune system – comprising approximately 25 proteins and peptides – which is responsible for quickly and non-specifically sensing and responding to tissue alterations and pathogen antigens. Complement enhances recognition and destruction of antigens by attracting phagocytic cells such as macrophages and neutrophils and by triggering cytokine expression.
