Calcification articles from across Nature Portfolio

Calcification is the deposition of calcium into the neointima (within atherosclerotic plaque) and/or the tunica media (the medial smooth muscle layer) of the blood vessels, and can occur with conditions such as atherosclerosis, chronic kidney disease and diabetes mellitus. Vascular calcification results in vascular stiffening and affects atherosclerotic plaque stability.
