Gravitational biology and space medicine

Guest Editor: Daniela Grimm  Aarhus University, Denmark

A return to the Moon, Mars expeditions, and the rise of space tourism will lead to an increasing number of human spaceflights. This Collection will focus on the challenges to astronauts’ health during long-term space missions, physiological changes caused by microgravity, available countermeasures and possible applications on Earth. Submissions investigating the impact of microgravity at the cellular level and on higher plants or microorganisms are also welcome.

Submissions are still welcome on a rolling basis.
Submissions received after April 2019 cannot be considered for the Collection launch, but accepted papers received after this date will be added to the Collection as they are published.

About the Guest Editor

 

Daniela Grimm is a specialist in internal medicine and clinical pharmacology. She is Associate Professor of pharmacology and space medicine at Aarhus University, Denmark, as well as Guest Professor of gravitational biology and translational regenerative medicine at Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg, Germany. Her research group investigates the impact of altered gravity conditions on human cells, with major topics being cancer research, pharmacology, tissue engineering, and translational regenerative medicine. Daniela Grimm has been serving as Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2016.

 

 

Soft sensors and actuators

Innovative programmable motion and compliant sensing have been achieved due to rapid advances in soft functional materials. This Collection will provide a platform for interdisciplinary studies of soft sensors and actuators, including their application in smart textiles, haptic electronics, biomedical devices and soft robotics.

About the Guest Editor

 

Il-Kwon Oh is a leading materials science researcher and the Director of the Active materials and dynamic systems Laboratory at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), South Korea. He obtained his PhD from KAIST in 2001 at the department of Mechanical Engineering, where he now holds the position of Full Professor. His research interests include soft actuators and artificial muscles, smart materials and structures, energy harvesting and energy conversion materials, as well as functional cellular structures. Il-Kwon Oh has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2016.

 

 

Extracellular vesicles in cell biology and medicine

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are cell-derived membranous structures which act as intercellular communicators in both physiological and pathological situations, hence offering extraordinary opportunities for clinical applications. This Collection is intended to deliver an overview of current advances in EV research and their application in therapeutics and diagnostics. Submissions focused on methodological tools for EV study are also welcome.

About the Guest Editor

 

Joana Maria Ramis is a Miguel Servet Researcher at the Balearic Islands Health Research Institute (IdISBa), as well as Adjunct Lecturer at the University of the Balearic Islands, Spain. Her research is focused on the development of new therapies and technologies for cellular and tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. She is more specifically interested in cell-free regenerative medicine through the use of extracellular vesicles derived from different cell types. Joana Maria Ramis has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2017.

 

 

Remote sensing of Earth hazards

Guest Editor: Francesca Cigna Italian Space Agency

The dynamics of our planet can be better understood by utilising the wealth of imaging bands, modes, spatial scales and temporal observation capabilities offered by remote sensing. This Collection will gather research Articles that use space-borne, aerial, and ground-based remote sensing based on UV, visible, IR, microwave and radio bands of the electromagnetic spectrum to study geophysical, hydrological, meteorological and climatological Earth processes and hazards.

About the Guest Editor

 

Francesca Cigna is a researcher in Earth observation and data analytics at the Italian Space Agency (ASI), Italy. She holds a BSc and an MSc in environment and territory engineering, and a PhD in Earth sciences. Her key areas of interest include satellite radar remote sensing, SAR interferometry (InSAR), image processing and time series analysis, geology and geomorphology, geophysics, natural and man-made hazards and risks, ground instability and land changes, landscape archaeology and cultural heritage. She has been serving as Editorial Board Member of Scientific Reports – Earth and Environmental Sciences section – since 2016.

 

 

Improving reproducibility in animal research

There have been increasingly lively discussions about many published scientific results failing validation by independent studies. This so-called reproducibility crisis has led to criticisms of study design in animal research. Inappropriate statistical methods, poor experimental design, and extreme standardization in trial design may contribute to the problem. The purpose of this Collection is to present original methodologies to improve the status quo and to report meta-research about the reproducibility of published animal research.

About the Guest Editor

 

Florian Frommlet is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Medical Statistics at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria. His research interests include both theoretical and applied statistics with applications in the life sciences. He has worked extensively on the problems of high dimensional data analysis which occur in modern genetics. Since 2014 he has been a member of the animal ethics committee of his university which motivates his strong interest in questions of reproducibility in animal trials. Florian Frommlet has been serving as Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2014.

 

 

2D materials: preparation, characterization and applications

Ever since the discovery of graphene, two-dimensional materials have generated significant attention due to their unique properties. This Collection will assemble original Articles that present novel methods to enable the synthesis of a broad spectrum of 2D materials, and that characterise their physical and electronic properties. Research into the potential uses of 2D materials is also welcome, exploring applications of their exceptional performances to electronics, clean energy, bioengineering and biosensing.

I-Wen Peter Chen is a tenured Professor at the Department of Applied Science at the National Taitung University, Taiwan. His research interests focus on 0D, 1D, and 2D nanomaterials synthesis and functionalization, as well as their applications in clean energy, electronic devices, biosensing and biocomposites. Sperm biology and male reproductive health

A male factor is detected in about half of infertile couples seeking medical assistance to achieve pregnancy. A number of clinical conditions and lifestyle factors can affect male fertility through alterations to spermatogenesis, sperm function, and endocrine profiles. This Collection will gather research Articles investigating sperm functional integrity and seminal plasma molecular pathways. About the Guest Editor

 

Ricardo Bertolla is a specialist in male infertility research. He is Professor of Urology at the Paulista School of Medicine of the Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil, where he is also Graduate Program Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Urology. In 2018 he joined the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports. His research group is interested in the cellular and molecular mechanisms of male infertility, with a specific emphasis on sperm functional alterations (including sperm DNA fragmentation and mitochondrial activity) as well as on semen proteomics.

 

 

Epigenetics within the tumor microenvironment

Advances in our understanding of tumor progression and relapse have underlined the importance of tumor microenvironment, which comprises components within the immediate vicinity of tumor cells such as fibroblasts, immune cells and the extracellular matrix. The exact way in which tumor microenvironment affects metastatic spread and acquired resistance to therapy is not fully understood, but accumulating evidence suggests epigenetic mechanisms are involved. This Collection invites original research focusing on epigenetic changes in tumor cells and their surrounding microenvironment.

About the Guest Editor

 

Aamir Ahmad holds a PhD in Biochemistry from AMU, India, and completed his post-doctoral training at the NCI, NIH, MD, USA. He is currently a research faculty at Mitchell Cancer Institute, AL, USA. Dr Ahmad’s research investigates the epigenetic basis of cancer drug resistance and metastasis, with a focus on non-coding RNAs, cancer stem cells and the tumor microenvironment. He has been serving on the Cancer section of Scientific Reports’ Editorial Board since 2017.

 

 

Membrane fusion

Protein-mediated membrane fusion is an essential, common denominator for viral infection, fertilization, intracellular protein trafficking, neurotransmission, hormone release, developmental cell-cell fusion, and autophagy. This Collection will shed light on the mechanisms of membrane fusion and will include studies in areas such as: the structure and the function of fusogens and auxiliary regulators, lipid dynamics, bilayer remodelling, fusion intermediates, and fusion pore dynamics.

About the Guest Editor

 

Yeon-Kyun Shin is a Roy J. Carver Professor of Biophysics at Iowa State University, USA. His lab uses spin labelling electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and single molecule techniques to investigate the structure and the dynamics of SNARE complexes, to uncover fusion intermediates, and to observe the real-time dynamics of the fusion pore. Highlights are the discoveries of a SNARE four-helix bundle with EPR in 1998 and the hemifusion intermediate in intracellular membrane fusion in 2005. He has been serving as Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2016.

 

 

Channelopathies: molecular and genetic mechanisms

Ion channels are ubiquitously expressed in human tissues and represent one of the largest and best understood functional groups of proteins, with over 400 different types identified so far. Our understanding of their function is critical for the development of therapeutic approaches aimed at treating and preventing channelopathies, human diseases related to the dysfunction of ion channels. This Collection will provide a home for research providing new directions for unravelling the molecular and genetic mechanisms of these pathologies.

Ciria C Hernandez is an Assistant Research Scientist at the University of Michigan Life Sciences Institute in Ann Arbor, USA. Her research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms that govern the regulation of ion channels and cell surface receptors, as well as developing new strategies to treat associated diseases. Her approaches include the combination of electrophysiology, structural modeling, biochemistry, and animal models. Dr Hernandez has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2014.

 

 

Radioisotopes and radiochemistry in health science

Radioisotopes and radiochemical methods find broad application in environmental research and nuclear medicine. This Collection shall provide an overview on current advances and novel concepts in radioisotope science and applications relating to human health. About the Guest Editor

 

Michael Ernst-Heinrich Fassbender is a leading scientist in the fields of radionuclide production and purification with more than 20 years of experience. He received his PhD degree (Dr. rer. nat.) in chemistry and radiochemistry from the University of Cologne, Germany. After a two-year postdoc fellowship at iThembaLABS, South Africa, he joined the Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA, to take on technical, scientific and scholarly responsibilities within the US Department of Energy’s National Isotope Program. He has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2017.

 

 

Mountain surface processes and regulation

Mountains cover about a quarter of the world’s land surface and provide water and mineral resources, timber and non-timber forest products, and many other food, fiber and fuel products. This Collection will provide a platform for interdisciplinary studies of mountain surface processes and their responses to climate change and human activities. Submissions are welcome in areas such as mountain ecology and environment change, degradation and restoration of mountain ecosystems, mountain plants and vegetation, dynamics of debris flows, landslides and soil erosion in mountain areas, and watershed management and development.

About the Guest Editor

 

Xuyang Lu is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China. His academic research focuses on the biogeochemical cycles of mountain ecosystems and their responses to climate change and human activities.  Recently his work has investigated the effect of litter and organic matter on soil C and N transformations and their microbial mechanisms. He is also involved in projects aimed at assessing the impact of policies such as grazing exclusion on Tibetan Plateau ecosystems. Prof Lu has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2017.

 

 

3D bioprinting of cells, tissues and organs

3D bioprinting has generated significant attention due to its ability to recapitulate native tissue microenvironments. This Collection will assemble original Articles that present novel bioprinting techniques, innovative cell-laden or scaffold-free bioprinting processes, advanced bioprinter technologies, synthesis and development of new functional bioinks, and bioprinting of functional tissues for tissue or organ repair and regeneration. Research on new biomimetic tissue or organ models for drug testing and disease modelling is also welcome.

Ibrahim Ozbolat is a Hartz Family Associate Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics, Biomedical Engineering Department, and a faculty of the Huck Institute of the Life Sciences at Penn State University, USA. He is a leading researcher in the field of 3D bioprinting, with over 100 publications including a sole-authored book. He has also received several national and international awards for his research. Prof Ozbolat has been serving as Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2017.

 

 

Nanotechnology in agriculture

Nanotechnology is increasingly transforming agriculture and crop production, enabling the development of a new generation of agrochemicals aimed at reducing negative environmental impacts while maintaining crop yields. This Collection will gather interdisciplinary research focusing on nanoformulation of agrochemicals and other nanotechnological applications in agriculture. It will also provide a home for nanotoxicology research and will shed light on how nanomaterials interact with plants, their environment, and other organisms.

Alejandro Pérez-de-Luque holds a PhD in agronomical engineering from the University of Córdoba, Spain, and is a Tenured Scientist at the Department of Plant Breeding and Biotechnology at IFAPA, Spain. His main research areas cover resistance and defensive mechanisms of crops against pathogens, and nanotechnology applied to plant research and agriculture. He has been serving as Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2015.

 

 

Quaternary taphonomy

Taphonomic analysis allows us to understand the formation processes and composition of fossil materials. This Collection will contribute to the field’s methodological development while gathering research Articles investigating Quaternary Period bone assemblages, with special interest in the Pleistocene. About the Guest Editor

 

Ruth Blasco is a researcher at the National Research Centre on Human Evolution (CENIEH), Spain. Her research, using taphonomy and zooarchaeology, focuses on the evolution of human behaviour throughout the Middle and early Late Pleistocene. She is also involved in various experimental studies on hominid-carnivore interactions and works at several archaeological sites in Europe and the Levant. Her research has been covered by several news blogs, including Nature News, the Discovery Channel and BBC News. In 2015, Ruth Blasco joined the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports.

 

 

Novel hardware and concepts for unconventional computing

Guest Editor: Martin Ziegler TU Ilmenau, Germany

The potential of machine learning can only be fully exploited if more efficient hardware is developed that meets the special needs of bio-inspired computing schemes. In this respect, non-volatile memory technology using memristive devices in combination with neuromorphic systems is a promising way to such hardware. The aim of this Collection is to provide a platform for interdisciplinary research on unconventional computing with new physical substrates. It will include studies in areas such as biological modelling, materials physics and analytics, memristive devices, neuromorphic circuits and other novel computing and circuit schemes.

Martin Ziegler is a Professor at TU Ilmenau, Germany, and head of the Department of Microelectronic and Nanoelectronic Systems. About the Guest Editor

 

Xiaochun Li is the Raytheon Endowed Chair in Manufacturing Engineering at the Departments of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering & Materials Science and Engineering at UCLA, USA. He received his PhD from Stanford University in 2001 and was awarded many distinctions for his research, including the National Science Foundation CAREER award in 2002. His research interests are in the interdisciplinary areas of innovative manufacturing and materials processing, applied physics and nanoscience. In 2018 he joined the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports. Prof Li has been elected as a Fellow of ASME and the International Society for Nanomanufacturing.

 

 

Identifying the mechanisms of drug hypersensitivity

About the Guest Editor

 

Clinical Professor Michaela Lucas is a research group leader at the Harry Perkins Institute, University of Western Australia, and a Consultant Clinical Immunologist at Sir Charles Gairdner and Perth Children's Hospitals where she leads the drug allergy services. She is currently the President Elect of the Australasian Society of Immunology and Clinical Immunology (ASCIA), Chair of the ASCIA Drug Allergy Committee, and is playing a key role in developing Australian guidelines on drug allergy management. Prof Lucas has a strong research background in T-cell immunology and more recently focuses on drug allergy and transplantation. In 2017 she joined the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports.

Quantitative and computational techniques in optical coherence tomography

Subhendu Kahaly is head of the Attosecond Sources Division at ELI-ALPS, Hungary. His research group investigates the fundamental and applied aspects of ultra-short laser-matter interaction with a special focus on attosecond physics, ultrafast metrology, plasma photonics and laser particle acceleration. After obtaining his PhD from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, Dr Kahaly held positions at Laboratoire d'Optique Appliquée (LOA) of Université Paris-Saclay, and at Commissariat à l'Énergie Atomique (CEA), Saclay, France. Subhendu Kahaly has been serving as Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2013.

Lan Guan is a Professor at the Department of Cell Physiology and Molecular Biophysics (effective September 2019) and Co-Director of the Center for Membrane Protein Research at the School of Medicine of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, USA. Her laboratory uses multiple biochemical and biophysics techniques including X-ray crystallography, thermodynamics of ligand binding using isothermal titration calorimetry, and tracer flux assays to characterize the symport mechanisms of cation-coupled nutrient transporters. King-Chuen Lin is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry at National Taiwan University. He specializes in photodissociation and reaction dynamics, atmospheric chemistry, materials designed for sensors and catalysts, and single molecule spectroscopy. He received the Academic Award from the Taiwan Ministry of Education in 2014, and the Richard B. Bernstein Award at the International Conference on Stereodynamics in 2018. About the Guest Editors

 

Ingo Eitel obtained the board certification in internal medicine, cardiology, intensive care medicine and cardiac magnetic magnetic resonance. He currently holds the positions of Professor of Cardiology and co-Director of the University Heart Center Lübeck, Germany. Prof Eitel’s research areas include interventional cardiology, acute coronary syndrome, reperfusion injury, cardioprotection, cardiogenic shock, CMR and Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Prof Eitel has acted as faculty in national and international meetings and has won several research awards including the Andreas Grüntzig award for interventional cardiology of the German Society of Cardiology, where he currently chairs the working group on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. He is also a member of several working groups of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). In 2018 he joined the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports.

Harald Langer studied medicine at the Otto von Guericke University of Magdeburg and TU Munich, Germany. After training in general and interventional cardiology and conducting postdoctoral research in the Experimental Immunology Branch at the NIH, Bethesda, USA, he was appointed in 2018 as Director of the Department for Cardiology, Angiology and Intensive Care Medicine and Professor of Cardiology at the University Heart Center Lübeck, Germany. In 2018 he also joined the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports. Prof Langer is a principal investigator for the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (Hamburg/Kiel/Lübeck), and his main research areas include interventional cardiology and structural heart diseases with a particular interest in diseases of the mitral valve. He also has a basic and translational focus in cardioimmunology.
