What is Scitable?

Scitable is an educational website offered by Nature Education for Biology and Genetics educators and undergraduate students. Scitable provides faculty with instructional articles, primary research literature, and online study tools to share with their students and help them develop a deeper comprehension and appreciation for the science of genetics.

Who should use Scitable?

Scitable is for both faculty and students. Faculty can create and share online study packs for their students; students can also use the resources inside of Scitable on their own to improve their understanding of genetics and to strengthen their papers and projects.

Are the articles in Scitable vetted and credible?

Yes. Scitable content and articles are peer-reviewed by the editorial staff of Nature Publishing Group as well as a special editorial board consisting of current faculty in genetics.

Can I give feedback on an article in Scitable?

Yes, just click on the feedback button at the top of the article and make any comments you have. Our editorial team will consider each and every one and make changes to the articles as appropriate.

How much does Scitable cost?

What is a Topic Room?

A Topic room is a virtual study room devoted to individual topics within genetics (like Chromosomes and Cytogenetics, or Evolutionary Genetics). In each Topic Room you can find dozens of instructional articles discussing the topic's key concepts, experimental milestones, and real-world applications and directories of people and groups from within the scientific and student community who have subscribed to the Topic Room, plus links to ongoing discussions about the topic that the Scitable community is engaged in.

Which Topic Rooms are available?

Currently there are nine Topic Rooms in genetics: Chromosomes and Cytogenetics, Evolutionary Genetics, Gene Expression and Regulation, Gene Inheritance and Transmission, Genes and Disease, Genetics and Society, Genomics, Nucleic Acid Structure & Function and Population and Quantitative Genetics.

When reading one article, where can I find all of the other articles in the Topic Rooms?

When reading any article in a Topic Room, click on "Article(s)" near the top and you'll get an overlay that shows you all of the articles you can read.

Can I join a discussion without registering on the site?

No, you will need to register on the site to Join a Group, contribute to a discussion, and other kinds of direct community involvement.Registration is free and easy!

You must be registered on the site to Join a Group, Create a Group, populate your Locker and collaborate with science students and faculty worldwide. How do I create a Group?

To create a Group for class study or collaboration on a topic, you must be registered. Go to the registration page and fill out the free and easy form. Then click on the Group link in the top navigation bar and click on "Create a Group" - then invite students or colleagues to join, and you'll have your own Scitable group.

How do I invite people to my Group?

Inviting people is easy. Once you have created a Group all you need to do is click on the "Invite to Join" link and click on the name of the registered person you would like to invite. They will automatically be sent an email to join your Group. Inviting people is easy. Can I make a Group private to the people I personally invite to join?

Yes. Once you have created the Group, click on "private" and no one but the people you specifically invite to join your Group will be able to access the discussions or content you are managing within the Group.

Can I send out one email to everyone in my Group?

Yes. Once you have created your Group, then you can email the people in your Group with information regarding meetings, discussions, upload articles, etc.

Can I share articles with someone who isn't registered?

Yes. You can share articles by clicking on the "Share" link found at the top of any article. The person you send it to will be able to read that article within the site. In order to participate in the full site functions, however, including community and collaboration, your friend will need to register. Registration is free and easy so send an invite using the "Recommend" button on the home page.

What is a Learning Path?

A Learning Path is a guided path through a sequence of articles and tests designed to give student's deeper understanding of complex topics. We have created a few Learning Paths for you to use right away; we'll be adding more over time, and eventually you'll be able to create your own learning paths too.

What is my Locker?

For registered site users, the locker is where we store your bookmarked articles, people, groups, discussions, etc. It appears on nearly every page and is a handy quick-reference for you as you explore the topics within the site.

How do I provide feedback on the usability of the site?
