My resea r ch follo ws studie s of midgut co mm uni ties in oth e r invasive b eetles a nd, to an extent, studie s of midgut com m un ities and ma n ageme n t method s in invasi ve caterpill ars (su c h a s gypsy moth larvae ) as we ll. I have obtained go od dat a on sp eci e s di strib u tion so far usin g cu lture-ba sed m e thod s, and I expect to have more compl e te dat a by the end of next week. De spite my initial difficulty extracting the guts from the fourth insta r larvae, I wa s able to obtain enoug h gut se ction s to work with. So far, I have been abl e to cre a te a preli m inary phylot y pe distrib u tion ba sed upon the mid gut of fourth instar la rvae a nd adult be etles; I have attach ed that list to this memo. At prese n t, I am about to start extrac ting DNA from th e total gut extract for u s e in 16S rRNA se quen cin g . I hope to obtai n a more com p lete pictu r e of the micro b i a l diversity of the midgut in this mann er, i n ca se any members of t he com m unit y are not cult urabl e. I will m eet with Dr. Robin Fowler of the Department of Entomology to discu ss the prelimi nary re sults of this e x perime n t. Overall, my experime n ts continue to go smoothly, an d I will be rea d y to prese n t those results at the lab meeting next month. cc: Robin Fo wler Attachment: Prelimina r y p h ylotype distri bution in ad ul t male and female A. plani penni s "
