Intermodular genes integrate disparate physiological responses coming from different modules.
NtrC is the general regulator of the nitrogen assimilation pathway. GadX is one of the central regulators of the glutamate-dependent acid resistance system (GAD system). The amtB gene encodes an NH4+ antiporter. Disruption of this gene impaired growth on ammonium only under acidic conditions. Ammonium is precursor of glutamate, which plays a central role in the GAD system.
