Moving On Rainbow-Colored Legs: Cilia And Ctenophores

Cilia are slender structures that protrude from a cell or organism and move in undulating waves. Many small animals use cilia to move, but these structures are not efficient enough to move larger creatures. Ctenophores, or comb jellies, are the largest animals to move using cilia. In ctenophores, cilia are specialized to function together as a pack or comb. While moving, the cilia refract white light into rainbow-colored pulses that appear to move along the body of the ctenophore.

Filmed and edited by Stefan Siebert. Original music written and performed by Bryn Bliska. Narration by Casey Dunn.
