Ancient History: Tyrian Purple

Before the development of synthetic dyes, pigments were created using organic materials. Nina Ruelle tells the story of Tyrian Purple, a dye created from the marine snail known as Bolinus brandaris and worn by the nobility of the ancient Roman empire. It may have been valuable to humans, but does this purple hue provide any benefit to the organism itself?
