Do you speak my language: N is for Name Server, Netiquette

N is for Name Server, Netiquette

N is another letter for which I can't think of many terms, and of the two I have neither are particularly relevant to eLearning.

Name Server: This is a server that translates web-addresses such as http://www.nature.com in to an IP address (see I - Do you speak my language: I is for Injection, IP address, IMAP). A name server is also called a domain name server (see D - Do you speak my language: D is for Database, debug, DNS).

Netiquette: A play on the word 'etiquette'. This actually does have a roll in teaching because if your want your students to be good net-citizens, and this may be important if you are running online discussion groups, and to play nice, then you may want to think about the ground rules. Nothing worse than having a troll (see T in this series) or two in a discussion group, or a bunch of flame baiters (see F - Do you speak my language: F is for Frontend, FORTRAN, Facebook, FAQ, Firewall, Flame, Flame Bait, FTP, FTPS).
