Did I keep my 2012 new year Tech Resolutions?

Just realised I haven't dealt with last year (2012) New Year's Resolutions, and I haven't come up with some for 2013.

So, what were the 2012 resolutions (full details can be found at Happy New Year: My 2012 Tech Resolutions)?

1. Spend more time explaining to FYIers that FYIing email is a waste of time

I started doing this, and had every intention of continuing, but there were just too many of them to cope with. I will be saying more about this some later posts when I look at email in general.

2. Try to get colleagues to understand that email is for short communications – it's not for writing novels

Failed at this.... again, there were just too many emails to cope with. Again, I will be saying more about this later.

3. Make my teaching more mobile

Yep, succeeded. I managed to make a couple more of my online teaching sites mobile, and I also managed to finally collect most of my teaching websites on to one site - http://teaching.ncl.ac.uk/bms

4. Get back to writing my eBook

This I failed to keep, and yet I did keep. The book I was working on I have now abandoned, and I have started a new one (see Writing an eText Book: progress update IV), however, due to some changes in my job (more on that in a later post) I have not really worked on it for 6 months. (I have just one chapter to do, and then a massive edit. May be I will get it finished this year?)

5. Spend more time coding for fun

Didn't happen, no time. Plus, my 'job change' has really burnt up any free time.

6. Get to grips with HTML5

Not really done a lot of HTML5 coding in the past year, but I have been slowly updating material, so I am still working on this...

7. Keep this blog going, and post on a more regular basis

I think I did a good job on this in the first 9 month, but I did have on massive break in Oct/Nov/Dec time. This was caused by a heavy teaching load, plus work on my 'new job'.

So, in summary: I think I did pretty poorly on this. Started off well with 1 and 2 but I couldn't keep going due to the constant flow of email. 4, 5, 6 and 7 suffered due to competing pressures on my time, and 3 was a success only because of my 'new job' which meant it had to be done.

Guess it is time for my 2013 resolutions?
