Nanoparticles vs. bacteria FREE

by Tim Fulmer, Senior Writer

doi:10.1038/scibx.2009.1130

Researchers from Singapore and China have designed a 20-amino-acid peptide that self-assembles into antimicrobial nanoparticles and has shown activity in rabbits infected with meningitis. More studies are needed to show whether the nanoparticles affect healthy tissue or provoke unwanted immune responses.

Targets and Mechanisms

Depending on GHSR

by Michael J. Haas, Senior Writer

doi:10.1038/scibx.2009.1131

Swedish researchers have used compounds from Aeterna Zentaris and Ipsen Group to develop evidence that ghrelin inhibition could treat alcohol dependence, if the receptor can be targeted without adversely affecting appetite or body weight.

The inosine conundrum

by Kai-Jye Lou, Staff Writer

doi:10.1038/scibx.2009.1132

A new study of inosine in a rat stroke model gives more impetus for studies in humans. But the path forward is uncertain as Alseres Pharmaceuticals needs a partner to develop the compound in the clinic, where key questions about delivery and the treatment window must be worked out.

Transdermal transgene control

by Kai-Jye Lou, Staff Writer

doi:10.1038/scibx.2009.1133

Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ) researchers have developed a system to control transgene expression in subcutaneously implanted cells using a skin-penetrating lotion containing an apple metabolite. The system has potential for the in situ production of therapeutic proteins if efficacy and potential toxicity are addressed in further in vivo testing.
