Today, clinicians perceive that the lipid-altering drugs known as statins are effective and generally safe in reducing atherosclerotic CHD events; however, after lovastatin was approved in the late 1980s, the initial road to statin use was somewhat bumpy. Questions were raised as to whether cholesterol was actually a CHD risk factor, whether lowering cholesterol was beneficial, and even more questions were raised about the efficacy and safety of statins—particularly with regard to the effect of statins upon overall mortality.
