Stroke constitutes the most serious and clinically important consequence of arterial hypertension. There is general agreement derived from meta-analyses of the benefits of antihypertensive treatment that a stringent reduction of blood pressure in hypertensive patients has the potential to reduce stroke incidence by at least 40%.
